WORLD REEF DAY 2019, SAFE SUNSCREEN AND AN EPIC SWEEPSTAKES

Ever since Hawaii’s bill to ban sunscreens containing ingredients that are harmful to our oceans—oxybenzone and octinoxate—there’s been much needed attention on this very real environmental concern. You’ll now notice several national and Hawaii-based companies have stepped up to formulate reef-safe suncare that’s effective and eco-friendly.

One such brand that’s paved the way for natural alternatives to SPF is Raw Elements. Founder and veteran lifeguard Brian Guadagno was frustrated by the lack of ocean-friendly natural sunscreens that actually worked, so he took it upon himself to create his own. The brand was a pioneer in the reef-safe movement, and today the collection includes a variety of tinted and regular face, body and lip suncare, as well as a keiki line. (We even have a Raw Elements sunscreen dispenser poolside at the Surfjack.)

As exciting is the brand’s latest environmental effort. Raw Elements, in partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, is hosting the first ever World Reef Day, which will kick off a whole month of initiatives to spread awareness on sustainability and demand action for our environment.

Here at the Surfjack, we’re all about sustainability. After all, our on-site restaurant Mahina & Sun’s has an ocean-friendly mission, and is one of Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean-Friendly Restaurants (operating without styrofoam and single-use plastic). Plus, in support of #PlasticFreeHawaii, we officially stopped offering plastic water bottles as an in-room amenity. So, of course, we were thrilled to partner with Raw Elements on an epic sweepstakes honoring World Reef Day 2019. The prize is a trip for four to Hawaii, some swag and unique experiences (including a 6-night stay at the Surfjack and a sustainable cooking lesson from renown Honolulu-based chef Ed Kenney of Mahina & Sun’s).

Learn more about Raw Elements, World Reef Day and enter the sweepstakes here (now through June 2).

We hope to see you at the Swim Club!
