SHAVE ICE, ACAI & OTHER TROPICAL TREATS IN WAIKIKI

Nothing’s better on a hot Hawaiian day than a cold sweet treat. Pre- or post-surf session, shopping spree, or beach hang, there are plenty of places to cool off and quell your cravings. Surely you’ve heard about one of Hawaii’s most loved desserts—shave ice—but there are a few hot spots serving up other locally sourced goods that are sure to satisfy. Below, three of our favorite Waikiki havens for tropical treats.

BANAN

This beach shack in the heart of Waikiki is serving up some seriously satisfying—and healthy!—soft serve. The catch? Banán uses locally grown bananas to create the deliciously smooth ice cream-like dessert. Flavors include straight up Banana, but also Acai, Chocolate Mac, Greens, Lilikoi and more. There are plenty of mouthwatering pre-chosen creations like the Chunkadelic (think Banana banán, macadamia nut honey butter, local dark chocolate, granola, shaved coconut and honey), or you can create your own magic. You can even opt for your banán in a fresh papaya instead of a bowl.

ISLAND VINTAGE SHAVE ICE

For more than 20 years, this Hawaiian coffee company has been providing gourmet Kona coffee, but right now, it’s Island Vintage‘s shave ice we’re here to rave about. Expect full-flavored syrups and refreshing flavor combos like the Heavenly Lilikoi, which features fluffy ice smothered in passionfruit and strawberry syrup, frozen yogurt, chewy mochi and popping boba.

SUNRISE SHACK

With a passion for healthy living, surfers-turned-entrepreneurs opened up the not-so-mellow-yellow Sunrise Shack right across from the North Shore’s world-famous Sunset Beach. The beachy little bungalow doled out so many super charged coffees, locally sourced superfoods and crave-worthy concoctions that the demand grew for another location here in Waikiki. At both locations, you’ll find their famous bullet coffee laced with grass fed butter, MCT oil and coconut oil, but also expect a wide variety of delicious, healthful smoothies and acai bowls. The must-try grinds are perfect for morning fuel, or an afternoon pick-me-up.
