Embrace the Spirit of May Day: Dive into the Art of Lei Making at Surfjack

May blog post

Aloha, dear travelers and island enthusiasts! As May draws near, our hearts at Surfjack are filled with the vibrant energy of Hawaii’s beloved tradition – May Day. Join us as we celebrate the richness of Hawaiian culture, particularly through the artistry of lei-making, a practice deeply intertwined with the essence of this festive occasion.

A Brief History of Lei Making
Lei-making is not merely a craft; it’s a sacred tradition passed down through generations, embodying the spirit of aloha and connection to the land. Dating back centuries, Native Hawaiians adorned themselves with leis crafted from natural materials like flowers, leaves, shells, and feathers, symbolizing love, respect, and hospitality.

Originally, leis were offerings to gods and chiefs, expressions of gratitude and reverence. Over time, they evolved into symbols of welcome and celebration, greeting visitors with warmth and affection. Each lei carries its own story, reflecting the beauty of Hawaii’s landscapes and the diverse cultures that call these islands home.

May Day: Honoring Tradition

May Day, or Lei Day as it’s affectionately known in Hawaii, holds a special place in our hearts. Established in 1928, Lei Day is a time to honor the art of lei making and celebrate the spirit of aloha that defines our island home. It’s a day of music, dance, and, of course, the vibrant display of colorful leis adorning locals and visitors alike.

At Surfjack, we invite you to immerse yourself in this time-honored tradition. Join us on May 1st from 6-7pm for a complimentary lei-making class, where you’ll learn the techniques passed down by generations of artisans.
