SUMMER AT THE SWIM CLUB: VOLUME 2

The season is heating up. We’re celebrating summer by collaborating with the community on three pool parties—each one guaranteed to bring you the best beats, brands, bikinis and more. We invite you to join us, Flux Hawaii and friends to kick off the season at Summer at the Swim Club: Volume 2.

Volume 2 features a bike pop-up shop and giveaway by Solé Bicycles; spiked shave ice by our artist-in-residence Ashkahn; fresh coconuts by The Cut; swimwear and the like by Volcom; femme floaties by Working Girls, and Flux mags.

The daytime disco will be provided by Smooth Sailing (also touring as Fleetmac Wood)—partners in music and love and hailing from Los Angeles and the United Kingdom. Several years ago, the pair combined their record collections to create a project that merged their love for what they call romantic techno and sunset disco: part roller-disco, part boat party with a little sprinkling of twinkly techno, house and re-edits. The Smooth Sailing musical policy? “Would this sound good on a boat at sunset?”

We talked story with Smooth Sailing about their DJing style, their first trip to Hawaii, and of course, music.

Some music that we’re enjoying right now is Sofi Tukker, a favorite new artist that we love to play and we’ve included their track “Moon Tattoo” (Frost Remix) on this mix. Agnes Obel is an artist that we saw live recently in Los Angeles that blew our minds—[she’s] very ethereal, filmic and perfect for a little musical introspection. On the flip-side of that mood, we love all the remixes that Joey Negro has been pumping out of late. His take on “Ride Like the Wind” by Christopher Cross is a track that simply had to be a part of this mix.

It’s our first visit to Hawaii so we’re very excited about playing at the Surfjack and exploring [the island]. Musically we chose tracks that felt sun-lit and optimistic with a swizzle stick of 70’s disco nostalgia. We love to go vintage shopping for records and clothes and we imagine there’s a lot of treasure on the island. The track “How Long” by Lipps Inc. we found in Athens, Greece a few weeks ago. We play the original by Ace but it was great to find a new take on it that is familiar but surprising.

We started DJing many years ago. We both DJ’ed separately before we got together in 2010 in the UK. It’s great fun to play together and share your passion. We definitely challenge each other musically which makes for a better set. It also means that one of us can jump in the pool while the other sets up the next track.

After our gig at Surfjack, we’re heading back to Los Angeles where we have a Smooth Sailing monthly residency at the Ace Hotel and then we’re off to Washington D.C. and Elements Music & Arts Festival NYC where we are booked to play our Fleetmac Wood project.
